The Art and Science of Log Home Building
Why should you choose Wiens Log Homes to build your dream home?
-
Because The Wiens family has been refining the art and science of log home
building since 1984 with over 200 homes throughout the world.
ART
- The Wiens family is intent on refining the art and science of log-home building. Since 1984, we have designed and built more than 200 homes throughout the world.
-
We are more than builders; we are artisans who take tremendous pride in our work. More importantly, we have a genuine interest in providing you with a home of the finest quality that will last for generations to come.
- The Wiens family knows that a home is more than just a house and we gladly work with you to create a specialized-custom-design exclusively suited for your family's needs.
-
Wiens uses only the finest quality logs. We have established a reputation for "big wood" by personally selecting each log with a 15-inch average diameter. Typically, Wiens builds homes with eight courses (layers of logs floor to ceiling) per story.
-
Our builders hand peel every log, and then carefully select the most closely matched logs to fit and form the massive walls.
-
The Wiens family builders’ treat our logs with reverence, hand scribing each one—much like a sculptor—before making any cuts.
SCIENCE
-
The wisdom of three generations of Wiens family log-home builders constantly strives to develop new ways to improve every detail of their homes.
-
The Wiens family distinctively utilizes “winter-cut” Douglas Fir logs. Having studied the shrinkage and movement that occurs as the logs dry, we can predict how the drying action will affect the logs. Our innovative solutions for working within this dynamic medium is demonstrated in our more than 200 homes constructed world-wide:
-
Our logs are fitted together along their lateral lines by overscribing the lateral grooves.
- Our cuts are specifically calculated to compensate for the future shrinkage and movement that will occur.
- Wiens has mastered a specially designed shrink-to-fit notch to connect perpendicular joints. Our unique “Saddle Notch” carefully calculates the overscribe so that as the logs shrink toward their center, the top log floats down the flat plane of the “saddle” using the natural action of the wood to make the seal even tighter.
-
A home built by the Wiens family is extremely energy efficient and low maintenance.
- Wiens takes advantage of a state of the art insulation system that utilizes corded, open cell foam with expansion memory, encased in a waterproof skin of closed cell foam. We pack this insulation in a "W" shaped compression-fit notch along the lateral lines. This new system replaces the old fiberglass insulation and creates a tight seal now and forever.
- No chinking is required on a Wiens log home. The airtight fit is clean and maintenance free.
- Steel rods, we call "through bolts" thread through the center of the log walls to add extra stability as the logs shrink and shift. The “through bolts” are designed to be easily tightened as necessary and are accessible through the crawl space.
- Wiens builds their family-log-homes to last hundreds of years!
MOST IMPORTANTLY
- Becase the Wiens family wants you to be so happy with your home that you will
brag to all your friends and neighbors, "The Wiens family built my home!"
